LOCH ARBOUR — This seaside village’s homes got their share of battering, and the tiny municipal beach club was wiped out by Hurricane Sandy. The ticket stand from the beach was sitting a block inland on Ocean Avenue on Thursday.

Workers from neighboring Allenhurst were removing three to four feet of sand and debris from the now closed-off streets that run perpendicular to the beach Thursday.

Sandy is a major storm, previously a hurricane, that has caused extensive flooding, power and transportation outages, and physical damage to the US East Coast and Caribbean. More than 100 deaths have been linked to the storm.

NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey's remote sensing program conducts aerial photographic surveys the coast to document coastal damage and impacts to navigation. 

The data contained in these photos provide emergency and coastal managers with the information they need to develop recovery strategies, facilitate search-and-rescue efforts, identify hazards to navigation and HAZMAT spills, locate errant vessels, and provide documentation necessary for damage assessment through the comparison of before-and-after imagery.
