Hurricane Sandy's Economic Damage Could Reach $50 Billion, Eqecat Estimates

huffingtonpost.com - November 1st, 2012 - Matthew Craft

Widespread power outages and subway shutdowns may wind up making Superstorm Sandy the second most expensive storm in U.S. history, according to the forecasting firm Eqecat. That would rank it right behind Hurricane Katrina.

Eqecat said Thursday that the damage from the storm will likely be far worse than it previously predicted, largely a result of Sandy hitting the most densely populated area in the country.

The firm doubled its previous estimate for the total bill and now says Sandy may have caused between $30 billion and $50 billion in economic losses, including property damage, lost business and extra living expenses.

Hoboken and Morristown Shortages

It appears that there are food, water and energy shortages in Hoboken and Morristown.  The problem right now is that commercial companies and thir vehicles are having difficulties operating in the flooding areas like Hoboken.  In those areas, emotions are getting stretched, where facilities and residences have no electricty or supplies.

The National Guard has several vehicles that can deliver food and water neighborhood by neighborhood.  Citizen groups are also forming to assist with food and water distribution.

Burger King has an emergency food and water distribution group.  They have been contacted.  Wegmans is fully operational in New Jersey.  Contacts have been made with New Jersey Emergency Services and with the New Jersey Food Council.

Efforts are now underway to establish channels for using crowd-sourcing, intelligent social networks, social network analysis, and media analysis on the New Jersey food and water assessments.  Linkages are being made between DHS and the National Center for Food Protection and Defense to identify and resolve gaps in assessment processes.

NOAA's Hurricane SANDY Response Imagery Viewer

NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey's remote sensing program conducts aerial photographic surveys the coast to document coastal damage and impacts to navigation.

The data contained in these photos provide emergency and coastal managers with the information they need to develop recovery strategies, facilitate search-and-rescue efforts, identify hazards to navigation and HAZMAT spills, locate errant vessels, and provide documentation necessary for damage assessment through the comparison of before-and-after imagery.
